Local Knowledge: Grayhawk Golf Club and the Frys Electronics Open

- PGA.com

PGA.com: This year, Scottsdale is hosting two PGA TOUR events. The first is The FBR Open - maybe most known for its raucous, interactive crowds. Will the Fry's Electronics Open be similar?

Shershenovich: No, these are two very distinct tournaments. The FBR is a great event but the Fry's Electronics Open will have its own unique and enjoyable atmosphere. We are excited about it, everything has come together to make this event really spectacular in its own right. The weather, the incredible support of The Thunderbirds, the outstanding field we will have; this tournament will be a very special event. The course here is a desert course and we can't accommodate the same size galleries as The FBR, but that could actually mean a better viewing experience for the fans. There are some similarities to the FBR of course, our most intimate hole for fans will be our 16th, a par three surrounded by grandstands - like you'd find at TPC Scottsdale. But for the fans that show up and the ones who watch on t.v., they'll remember the Fry's Electronics Open on its own.

PGA.com: This is the "season" for your area. How was the reaction from your membership when they learned they'd have to give up the course for a week or two?

Shershenovich: Well, that's the beauty of Grayhawk. We have no memberships, we are a 100% public course. And though we're giving up a week's worth of tee times, the return that a course like ours gets from the exposure and publicity of having the best players in the world come to your course to play, well, that's quite a great coup for us.

PGA.com: Phil Mickelson is your most famous ambassador. He's playing this week, certainly as a testament to his relationship with the course more than any PGA TOUR concerns. Can you give us a statement on what Phil's presence means to the course, this week and as a constant ambassador for Grayhawk?

Shershenovich: If you look at the field this week, you'll see that so many players are making an effort to take part who you might not normally think of playing in Fall Series events. Part of that is the great environment, for players and fans, here in Scottsdale. Also, there is the incredible respect and admiration that many of the players have with the Thunderbirds, who they have known from their involvement in golf from the junior series and AJGA events all the way up to the TOUR. As for Phil Mickelson, I just can't say enough about how great it has been for our facility to have an ambassador like Phil represent us everywhere he plays. He's had our club logo on his bag for over ten years - and it's been a privilege and honor for us to have had such a relationship with one of the premier players in the world. We all celebrate his success and are excited about his continued ties to Grayhawk.

PGA.com: Is Grayhawk looking to host more high-profile events?

Shershenovich: It's not that we're out actively seeking, but if a compelling event were to come up, we would certainly be interested and honored to be considered. I think the Fry's Electronics Open will show that we are a world-class venue to host these full-field events on any level.
